The Family Support Service provides families with children aged from birth to 12 years with assistance and support to address family and parenting difficulties.
The Service conducts a supported playgroup for parents with pre-school aged children and a parent Support Group to develop parenting skills. Our qualified staff can also assist families through specific family counselling, advice, advocacy, general support and by referral to other support agencies.
Support for Parents
Playtime is a supported playgroup for parents with children from 0-5 years old held at 2 Washington Avenue, Riverwood from 10:00am to 12:00noon every Monday and Friday during school terms. Weekly activities encourage children’s social interaction. Parents encouraged to contribute $1 towards the costs of fruit and milk for the children’s morning tea.
Parent Support Group meets every Wednesday from 10:00am to 12:00noon at Riverwood Community Centre. This social group promotes safe and healthy parenting practices, parents’ self-awareness, and women’s health.
Parenting Skills
Each year the Family Support team delivers three programs to assist parents to develop their parenting skills.
Tuning in to Kids is a program focussing on the emotional connection between parents and children, through ‘emotion coaching’. The program promotes skills to recognise, understand and respond to children’s emotions in an accepting and supportive way.
Circle of Security helps parents to reflect on their own experiences of being parented and how this affects their parenting. Parents learn to respond to their child through managing behaviour and improving parental confidence.
The Positive Parenting Program and Seminars help parents to develop the skills to raise confident and resilient children.
